Interning in a Death-care Community: A Different Path

Are you passionate about caring for the dying and supporting the grieving? Do you seek a deeper purpose in death care, one focused on compassion rather than profit? Herland Forest offers an internship where you can contribute to an evolving model of care that serves both people and the planet.

A Unique Opportunity at Herland Forest

Herland Forest is not just any cemetery—it’s a non-profit, community-operated burial ground. Think of it like a family-owned funeral establishment, open to those passionate about this work. If you weren’t born into a death care family, this is your chance to join one.

This is not a commercial internship focused on embalming and casket sales. Instead, it offers you the chance to explore a radical, earth-friendly alternative that supports grieving families while also grounding and supporting you.

Death Care Meets Intentional Community

Herland Forest exists at the intersection of death care and intentional community. We steward 120 acres of forest, demonstrating sustainable systems and creating a natural burial permaculture forest. Our community doesn’t just bury the dead; we live close to the land with gardens, orchards, and animals, embracing a lifestyle of stewardship that isn’t possible in an urban setting.

We also operate a natural organic reduction facility, giving back to the earth in a way that aligns with our values.

Why Choose Herland Forest?

If you’re here for the meaning, not the money—if you seek a non-profit practice that serves both the grieving and the caretakers—then this internship might be your first step in a different kind of death care journey.

At Herland Forest:

  • We’re not employees; we’re a community.
  • We don’t embalm or sell expensive caskets.
  • We help people rejoin the cycle of life in a way that honors their values and respects nature.

This isn’t corporate death care. We’re building a practice that puts peace, respect, and community at the forefront, far from the Industrial Funeral Complex.

Living in Balance

There’s no better place to bury grief than in a garden, where you’re surrounded by life. If you’re searching for a balance between honoring the dying and supporting the living, a cottage in Herland Forest might be the right place for you.
